Study Notes

Coal

Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock with a high amount of carbon content, formed from plant remains that have been consolidated without any chemical changes over millions of years under heat and pressure. It is primarily used as fuel to generate electricity and heat homes and businesses, often through burning coal in steam turbines in power plants.

Formation

Coal is formed by the accumulation and compression of dead organic materials such as leaves, stems, roots, bark, and woody debris in swamps and bogs. As these materials decompose, they release gases which react chemically with other compounds present in the water. Over time, this process creates layers of peat, which eventually becomes compacted under additional weight and turns into lignite, bituminous, subbituminous, or anthracite coal.

Types of Coal

There are four main types of coal, each with varying levels of heat content and moisture:

  1. Anthracite - The highest rank of coal, it contains less than 1% moisture and a heating value around 30 million BTUs per ton.
  2. Bituminous - This type has between 25% and 35% moisture content.
  3. Subbituminous - This type has between 35% and 50% moisture content.
  4. Lignite - The lowest rank of coal, it contains up to 80% moisture.

The higher the ranking, the less water needs to be removed during power generation, making them more efficient fuels.

Uses of Coal

Coal is primarily used for electricity generation, accounting for about two-thirds of global coal consumption. Other uses include steel production, where coal is converted into coke which is then used in blast furnaces, and in cement manufacturing.

Environmental Impact

Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and other pollutants that contribute to climate change and harm public health. Additionally, mining operations can cause environmental damage such as acid mine drainage, habitat destruction, and stream pollution. However, advances in cleaner coal technologies have improved the efficiency and reduced many of these negative impacts.

Test your knowledge on the formation process and types of coal, including anthracite, bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite. Explore the uses of coal in electricity generation, steel production, and its environmental impact. Learn about how coal is formed from dead organic materials over millions of years.
