Study Notes

Cloud Computing Overview

  • Enables consumers to get computing resources as and when required, without human intervention
  • Facilitates self-service provisioning of resources using a user-friendly interface
  • Users have their own admin console to view and manage their existing infrastructure

Essential Characteristics of Cloud Computing

On-Demand Self-Service

  • Enables consumers to get computing resources as and when required, without human intervention
  • Facilitates self-service provisioning of resources using a user-friendly interface
  • Users have their own admin console to view and manage their existing infrastructure

Broad Network Access

  • Cloud services are accessed via the network, usually the internet, from a broad range of client platforms
  • Enables accessing services from anywhere across the globe

Resource Pooling

  • IT resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers, based on a multi-tenant model
  • Consumers have no knowledge about the exact location of the resources provided
  • Resources are dynamically assigned and reassigned based on consumer demand

Rapid Elasticity

  • Ability to scale IT resources rapidly, as required, to fulfill changing needs without interruption of service
  • Resources can be both scaled up and scaled down dynamically
  • The Cloud appears to be infinite, allowing consumers to start with minimal computing power and expand as needed

Metered Service

  • Consumers are billed based on the metered usage of Cloud resources
  • Cost incurred on a pay-per-use basis
  • Pricing/billing model is tied up with the required service levels
  • Resource usage is monitored and reported, providing transparency for a chargeback

Cloud Service Models

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

  • Provides resizable compute capacities, such as RAM and processing power
  • Enables users to increase RAM or processing power as needed
  • Examples: virtualizing multiple servers into a single physical server

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)

  • Provides a hosted platform for developing and deploying applications
  • Enables users to log in and use the platform, with all necessary tools and languages readily available
  • Examples: custom-built applications, off-the-shelf applications

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

  • Provides software applications over the internet, eliminating the need for local installation
  • Examples: CRM (Customer Relationship Management), with advantages such as increased productivity and improved customer relationships

Cloud Deployment Models

Public Cloud

  • Allows users to access and obtain services over the public internet
  • Enables on-demand access to services, with some services available for free
  • Security threat due to less authority over the public internet

Learn about the essential characteristics of Cloud Computing, different Cloud services and deployment models, economics, benefits, and challenges.
