The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) attributes the primary cause of climate change in recent decades to human actions, especially the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. These activities release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to a gradual warming of the planet.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the principal greenhouse gas responsible for the warming of the lower atmosphere. Although other greenhouse gases like methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) also contribute to the warming effect, CO2 is the most prevalent and impactful.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, aimed for a universal, legally binding agreement to combat climate change. A key feature of the agreement is the commitment of almost all nations to set voluntary targets for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. This collaborative effort aimed to limit the global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees Celsius, ideally to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

Ethiopia's Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy aims to enhance resilience and sustainability while achieving green economic growth. The strategy encourages sustainable agriculture, forest conservation, and energy efficiency. However, it excludes the expansion of electricity generation through fossil fuels, focusing on cleaner renewable energy sources.

Ethiopia's CRGE strategy emphasizes the utilization of renewable energy sources for electricity generation. This includes harnessing the power of hydro, geothermal, solar, and wind energy. By focusing on these clean energy sources, Ethiopia aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a greener, more sustainable energy system.
