Matter
- Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.
States of Matter
- Matter can be classified based on its physical state, which describes its rigidity, compressibility, and ability to flow:
- Solid: Rigid, incompressible, does not flow easily.
- Liquid: Not rigid, relatively incompressible, flows easily.
- Gas: Not rigid, compressible, flows easily.
Crystalline vs. Amorphous Solids
- Crystalline solids: Have a highly ordered arrangement of atoms or molecules in a repeating pattern. This results in a defined shape and melting point.
- Amorphous solids: Have a disordered arrangement of atoms or molecules. They lack a defined shape, and their melting point is not distinct and occurs over a range of temperatures.
Characteristics of Liquids
- Fluidity: Liquids flow readily, as the particles composing liquids can move past each other.
