    Classification of Words by Accentuation

    • Agudas: Words that have the accent on the last syllable. Examples: camión, sofá, árbol. The rule for determining if a word is written with a tilde (accent mark) is: if the last syllable is stressed and contains a vowel that is either a, e, i, o, or u, then it's a word-accent that would be marked with a tilde.

    • Graves: Words that have the accent on the second-to-last syllable. Examples: examen, cartel, mesa. The general rule in this category is that if last syllable is not stressed, then apply the tilde if last syllable is only a, e, i, o, or u,

    • Esdrújulas: Words that have the accent on the third-to-last syllable. Examples: líquido, físico, ángel. Generally use tilde, regardless if vowel is one of a, e, i, o or u.

    • Sobresdrújulas: Words that have the accent on the fourth-to-last or further syllable. Examples: estúdiamelo, llévatelo. Always requires a tilde.

    Diphthong, Llanas, and Hiatus

    • Diphthong: A combination of two vowels in a single syllable pronounced as a single sound. Examples: museo, aire, viento. Diphthongs involve a sequence of vowels where air is quickly blown through the area of the mouth and are typically when the stressed vowel comes before the vowel that is less stressed.

    • Llana (or "llana"): Words that have the accent on the penultimate (second-to-last) syllable, but do not receive a written accent. Examples: orden, examen, cartel. A word is labelled a "llana" when the stressed syllable falls on the second to the last syllable, but it does not need a tilde.

    • Hiatus: The separation or distinct pronunciation of two vowels, which appear next to each other in a word. Examples: real, caos, teatro. This is recognized mainly because air is drawn in between two vowels, as distinct sounds.

    Punctuation Marks

    • Period (.): Marks the end of a declarative or imperative sentence.

    • Comma (,): Used to separate items in a list, to set off phrases and clauses, or to indicate a pause in a sentence.

    • Question Mark (?): Marks the end of an interrogative sentence.

    • Exclamation Point (!): Marks the end of an exclamatory sentence or to express strong emotion.

    • Semicolon (;): Used to join closely related independent clauses that would be too closely linked using a comma.

    • Colon (:): Introduces a list, explanation or example.

    • Apostrophe ('): Used to indicate contractions, possession, or omission of letters.

    • Quotation Marks (“ ” or “ ”): Enclose direct quotations.

    • Parentheses ( ): Enclose supplementary information, or to mark interrupters within the sentence.

    • Brackets [ ]: Used to enclose supplementary information that is critical to the sentence or is a correction to the sentence. Brackets typically add a further layer of explanation, unlike parentheses.

    • Ellipsis (...): Indicates an omission of words or a trailing thought.
