• Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
• It can be caused by either bacterial pneumonia, viral pneumonia, or fungal pneumonia.
• Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is a type of bacterial pneumonia that is acquired during a hospital stay.
• Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a type of pneumonia that is acquired outside of a medical or institutional setting.
• Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a type of pneumonia that can be caused when people who are using a ventilator get pneumonia.
• Aspiration pneumonia is a type of pneumonia caused by inhaling bacteria from food, drink, or saliva.
• Pneumonia can be divided into 2 main types, bronchopneumonia and lobar pneumonia.
• Bronchopneumonia affects multiple areas throughout the lung and is not localized to specific lobe, while lobar pneumonia affects specific lobe in the lung and passes through 4 stages.
• Congestion, red hepatization, gray hepatization, and resolution are all signs of pneumonia.
