Citation Styles
-
MLA (Modern Language Association):
- Developed in 1883, used for language and literature papers.
- Widely used in universities and colleges, and other disciplines.
- Provides a structured method for presenting papers and citations.
-
APA (American Psychological Association):
- Used in social sciences, medical fields, and education.
- Requires in-text citations (e.g., author, year, page number) and a reference list.
- Reference list organizes sources alphabetically by author last name.
- Format varies depending on source type (journal article, website, book).
-
Chicago Style (Chicago Manual of Style):
- Flexible style guide for humanities, sciences, and other disciplines.
- Uses superscript numbers in the text, corresponding to footnotes with full citations.
- Footnotes include author, title, publication details, and page numbers.
- Bibliography is formatted based on the subject field.
In-Text Citations
- General Function: Parenthetical references in the text to source information.
- Components: Usually author, year, and sometimes page number.
- Use Cases: Directly quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, referencing other's work.
- Omission: Citations aren't needed for well-known facts.
- Differences: MLA (author-page), APA (author-date), and Chicago (author-date).
Works Cited/Reference Page (MLA)
- Purpose: List all sources cited in the paper.
- Requirements:
- "Works Cited" title is centered at the top.
- Same font style/size for title and text.
- Double-spaced text.
- Reverse indentation for subsequent lines of entries.
- Alphabetical order by author's last name.
- Format differs based on source type (book, website, etc.)
Differentiating Book Types
- Authored Book: Written by one or more individuals.
- Edited Book: Contains material from many authors, compiled by an editor. Cite the editors, not the individual authors.
- Revised Book: Same content, republished with new information. Use the edition you read.
Identifying Citation Style
- Examine the cover of the book or other material, to determine the style.
