Study Notes
Heartbeat
- Pulse: The alternating expansion and contraction of arteries, 72 bpm
- Blood pressure: The force exerted by blood against blood vessel walls, 120/80 mm
- Arteries: Carry blood away from the heart, high pressure, thick walls, small lumen, no valves
- Veins: Carry blood towards the heart, low pressure, thin walls, large lumen, valves prevent backflow
- Blood supply to heart: Coronary arteries and veins
Stages of Heartbeat
- Diastole: Heart is relaxed
- All atria and ventricles are relaxed
- Blood enters both atria
- All valves are closed
- Systole:
- Blood from atria to ventricles
- Sinoatrial (SA) node causes both atria to contract
- Bicuspid and tricuspid valves open to force blood into ventricles
- Semilunar valves are closed
- Blood leaves the heart
- The atria relax
- Atrioventricular (AV) node causes ventricles to contract
- Blood is forced out through the semilunar valves
- When all blood has left ventricles, semilunar valves close, end of cycle
