Circulatory System I
- The circulatory system comprises the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The cardiovascular system refers solely to the heart and blood vessels.
- Its primary function is transporting substances throughout the body via blood.
- Blood serves as the liquid medium for carrying these substances.
- Blood vessels direct blood flow to specific destinations.
- The heart acts as the pumping mechanism to keep blood flowing.
Functions of the Circulatory System
- The circulatory system is vital for transporting substances throughout the body.
- Deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right side of the heart and is routed to the lungs for oxygenation. Meanwhile, oxygenated blood from the lungs is pumped to the left side of the heart, then to the body.
Pulmonary and Systemic Circuits
- The cardiovascular system consists of two main divisions: the pulmonary and systemic circuits.
- The pulmonary circuit carries blood to the lungs for gas exchange and returns oxygenated blood to the heart.
- The systemic circuit delivers oxygenated blood to all body organs, including portions of the lungs.
The Pathway of Blood Flow Through the Heart
- Blood flows from the body through the right side of the heart, to the lungs, and back through the left side for distribution to the rest of the body.
- Oxygen-poor blood is depicted in violet, while oxygen-rich blood is depicted in orange/red.
The Heart Wall
- The heart wall consists of three layers: the epicardium (outer layer), myocardium (middle, muscular layer), and endocardium (inner layer lining the chambers).
The Chambers of the Heart
- The heart has four chambers: two atria (superior) and two ventricles (inferior).
- The atria receive blood from the veins, while the ventricles pump blood into arteries.
The Valves
- The atrioventricular (AV) valves, including the tricuspid (right) and mitral (left) valves, regulate blood flow between the atria and ventricles.
- Pulmonary and aortic valves control blood flow from the ventricles to the pulmonary trunk and aorta respectively.
The Coronary Circulation
- The coronary arteries branch off the aorta to supply blood to the heart muscle.
- The coronary sinus collects deoxygenated blood from the heart and returns it to the right atrium.
The Conduction System
- The conduction system regulates the coordinated contraction of the heart chambers.
- The sinoatrial (SA) node acts as the pacemaker, initiating the heartbeat and activating the atrioventricular (AV) node, which then transmits the signal to the rest of the heart.
