The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system, is a network of organs, blood vessels, and blood that delivers oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells and tissues throughout the body, while removing waste products. The primary components of the circulatory system are the heart, blood, and blood vessels.
Heart Anatomy and Function
The heart is a muscular organ located near the center of the chest. It is roughly the size of two adult hands held together and is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. The heart has four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. The atria receive blood from the body, while the ventricles pump blood out to the rest of the body.
The heart wall consists of three layers: the epicardium, the myocardium, and the endocardium. The myocardium, the middle layer, is the muscular layer responsible for contracting and pumping blood. The heart's chambers are separated by valves that ensure blood flows in one direction.
Blood Components
