    • Simon Peter: Known as "The Rock", he was a fisherman from Bethsaida and Capernaum. He wrote 1 & 2 Peter and is believed to have evangelized among Jews, possibly going as far as Babylon. Tradition says he was crucified in Rome.
    • James "the Elder": Also known as "Boanerges" (son of thunder), he was a fisherman from Bethsaida, Capernaum, and Jerusalem. He preached in Jerusalem and Judea and was beheaded by Herod.
    • John "the Beloved Disciple": Brother of James, he was also known as "Son of Thunder". He was a fisherman from Bethsaida, Capernaum, and Jerusalem. John wrote the Gospel of John, 1, 2, and 3 John, and the book of Revelation. He is believed to have labored in Asia Minor, particularly in Ephesus.

    The Quiet Workers

    • These disciples were less prominent than the "inner circle".
    • Andrew: Peter's brother, he was a fisherman originally a disciple of John the Baptist. Tradition says he preached in Scythia, Greece, and Asia Minor and was crucified on a St. Andrew’s Cross.
    • Philip: From Bethsaida, he is believed to have preached in Phrygia and died a martyr at Hierapolis.
    • Bartholomew (Nathanael): From Cana of Galilee, tradition says he was a missionary to Armenia and was flayed to death.
    • Thomas (Didymus): From Galilee, tradition says he traveled to Parthia, Persia, and India and was martyred near Madras.
    • Matthew (Levi): A tax collector from Capernaum, he wrote the Gospel of Matthew. Tradition says he died a martyr in Ethiopia.

    The Little Known

    • These disciples received less attention in the Bible.
    • James "the Less (or Younger): Son of Alphaeus, he wrote the epistle of James. Tradition says he preached in Palestine and Egypt and was crucified in Egypt.
    • Jude (Lebbaeus or Thaddaeus): Brother of James "the Less", he was believed to have preached in Assyria and Persia and died a martyr in Persia.
    • Simon "the Cananaean (or Zealot): From Galilee, tradition says he was crucified.

    Other Disciples

    • Jesus had other followers besides the twelve.
    • The Masses: People attending Jesus' preaching and teachings.
    • Seventy Disciples and Friends: Those who were impacted by Jesus' teachings and committed to following him.

    Demands of Discipleship

    • Allegiance to Christ: Complete dedication to Jesus Christ's teachings and mission.
    • Readiness to Leave Family and Possessions: Sometimes this means physically leaving behind home, family, and possessions to follow Jesus or go on a mission.
    • Bearing the Cross: Accepting suffering and hardships that come with following Jesus.

    Two-Fold Purpose of Making Disciples

      • To be associated with him.
      • To express loyalty to him.
      • To share life experiences with him.
      • To learn from him.
    • To Send Them Forth:
      • Jesus commissioned his disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey God.

    Tasks of the Disciples

    • Represent Christ and preach his message.
    • Cast out demons.
    • Heal the sick and cure lepers.
    • Raise the dead.
    • Give freely as they have received.
    • Follow the commands of Jesus.
