    Laboratory Specimen Handling

    • Send specimens via pneumatic tube system, excluding CSF, deep wound cultures, blood bank bags/products, pathology specimens, and blood gases.
    • Specimen requirements can be found in Careforce under Departments > Laboratory > Test Directory.

    Patient Identification

    • Use two patient identifiers: patient's name and Medical Record Number (MRN).

    Blood Draw Protocol

    • For drawing blood below an IV, the IV must be turned off for at least 2 minutes before collecting the specimen.
    • For drawing blood above an IV, turn off the IV for at least 10 minutes prior to specimen collection.

    Order of Blood Draw

    • Follow the correct order of draw to avoid contamination:
      • Blood cultures (pink, grey, purple)
      • Blue
      • Red
      • Yellow
      • Green
      • Lavender
      • Pink
      • Grey (for lactic acid, must be on ice)

    Test Considerations

    • PTT (Partial Thromboplastin Time) can be falsely elevated if IV tubing is not adequately cleared before collecting the specimen.

    Pediatric Considerations

    • The amount of blood to inoculate in the PedsPlus aerobic culture bottle is up to 5mL.
