Synthesis of Anthracene

Friedal Craft Reaction

  • Benzyl chloride (C6H5CH2Cl) reacts with benzene in the presence of AlCl3 to form diphenylmethane (C6H5CH2C6H5)

Haworth Synthesis

  • Benzene reacts with phthalic anhydride in the presence of AlCl3 to form ortho-benzylbenzoic acid
  • Ortho-benzylbenzoic acid is then treated with conc. HCl to give 9,10-anthraquinone
  • Distillation of 9,10-anthraquinone with zinc dust yields anthracene

1,4-Addition Reaction

  • Anthraquinone reacts with zinc dust to form 9,10-dihydroanthracene
  • 9,10-Dihydroanthracene loses two protons to yield anthracene

Oxidation Reaction
