    Study Notes

    Measuring the Acidity of Solutions

    • Acids are compounds that form solutions with a sour taste, react with (corrode) metals, and can cause burns on skin. Some acids are harmless (e.g., lemon juice), while others are extremely dangerous (e.g., hydrochloric acid).

    • Bases are compounds that form solutions with a bitter taste, feel slippery, react with (break down) fats and oils, and can cause burns on skin. Some bases are harmless (e.g., baking soda solution), but others should be handled with extreme care (e.g., drain cleaner).

    Identifying Acids and Bases

    • Litmus is a dye used to identify acids and bases. Acidic solutions turn blue litmus paper red, while basic solutions turn red litmus paper blue.

    pH Scale

    • The pH scale measures the acidity or basicity of a solution. Numbers below 7 indicate acidity, with lower values meaning more acidic. Numbers above 7 indicate basicity, with higher values meaning more basic. A pH of 7 is neutral.

    • Examples of pH values are shown in Figure 4 (e.g., lemon juice has a pH of approximately 2.0, baking soda has a pH of approximately 8.2).
