5 Questions
What is the main purpose of a catalytic converter in a car's exhaust system?
To convert harmful exhaust gases into less toxic substances
Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of a strong acid?
Has a high pH value (close to 14)
In the reaction $2Na + 2HCl ightarrow 2NaCl + H_2$, what is the limiting reactant?
Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
What is the purpose of using a desiccant in a sealed container?
To absorb any moisture present in the container
Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of an ionic bond?
Involves the sharing of electrons between atoms
Study Notes
Catalytic Converter
- Main purpose: to reduce emissions of harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, by converting them into less harmful substances like carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen
Strong Acid Characteristics
- A strong acid is characterized by: complete dissociation in water, high degree of ionization, strong tendency to donate an H+ ion, and a high concentration of hydrogen ions
- NOT a characteristic of a strong acid: partial dissociation in water
Limiting Reactant
- In the reaction 2Na + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2, the limiting reactant is the reactant that is consumed first, determining the amount of product formed
- Identification of limiting reactant is important to calculate the maximum amount of product that can be formed
Desiccant
- Purpose of using a desiccant in a sealed container: to absorb moisture and maintain a dry environment, preventing damage or degradation of materials
Ionic Bond Characteristics
- Characteristics of an ionic bond: formed between two atoms with a large difference in electronegativity, resulting in the transfer of one or more electrons, and a strong electrostatic attraction between the ions
- NOT a characteristic of an ionic bond: sharing of electrons between atoms
