Study Notes
Characteristics of Living Things
- Seven characteristics of living things: Reproduction, Movement, Sensitivity, Feeding, Growth, Respiration, and Excretion
- These characteristics are present in all living things
Cells
- Cells are the basic units of all living things
- If an organism is made up of cells, it was once alive
- If an organism was never made up of cells, it was never alive
Biodiversity
- Biodiversity refers to the huge variety of living things in the world
- Biodiversity is decreasing at an alarming rate
- Over half the planet's animal species have already gone extinct
- 200 different species of animals go extinct every day due to:
- Pollution
- Climate Change
- International trade
- Habitat Destruction
- Intensive Agriculture
Species and Kingdoms
- A species is a group of organisms that can exchange genes and interbreed
- The five kingdoms of living things: Animal Kingdom, Plant Kingdom, Fungi Kingdom, Monera Kingdom (Bacteria and Blue-Green algae), and Protist Kingdom (Algae, Microscopic organisms)
- The Animal Kingdom is divided into vertebrates (have a spine/backbone) and invertebrates (don't have a backbone)
Animal Kingdom
- Examples of vertebrates: Fish, Birds, Reptiles, Mammals, and Amphibians
- Examples of invertebrates: Insects, Crabs, Spiders, Snails, and Earthworms
Parasites
- A parasite is an organism that lives in or on another organism and depends on it for life
- Examples of parasites: Flea, Tick, and Head Lice
Plant Kingdom
- Plants are producers that make their own food through photosynthesis
Fungi Kingdom
- Fungi are made up of masses of long thread-like cells
- They reproduce by producing tiny spores in special structures
- Fungi can cause food to rot, but they also act as decomposers, helping nutrients return to the environment
Protist Kingdom
- Many protists are one-celled organisms that live in water and obtain nutrients from it
- Examples of protists: Algae and seaweed
Bacteria Kingdom
- The Bacteria Kingdom is the largest kingdom in terms of number of species
- Bacteria reproduce by splitting into two
Plankton
- Plankton are microscopic plants and animals that drift along with water currents
- There are two types of plankton: Phytoplankton (plants and bacteria) and Zooplankton (animals that eat phytoplankton or other zooplankton)
Eutrophication
- Eutrophication is the over-enrichment of nutrients in water, causing overgrowth and decay of plants and deoxygenation of water
- This can lead to the death of aquatic organisms
