Study Notes
Characteristics of Eubacteria
- Characterized by the presence of a rigid cell wall
- If motile, have a flagellum
Cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae)
- Have chlorophyll a, similar to green plants
- Photosynthetic autotrophs
- Can be unicellular, colonial, or filamentous
- Found in freshwater, marine, or terrestrial environments
- Colonies are often surrounded by a gelatinous sheath
- Can form blooms in polluted water bodies
- Some can fix atmospheric nitrogen in specialized cells called heterocysts (e.g., Nostoc and Anabaena)
Chemosynthetic Autotrophic Bacteria
- Oxidize inorganic substances (nitrates, nitrites, ammonia) to produce ATP
- Play a crucial role in recycling nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, sulfur)
Heterotrophic Bacteria
- Most abundant type of bacteria in nature
- Important decomposers
- Some have a significant impact on human affairs (e.g., making curd from milk, producing antibiotics, fixing nitrogen in legume roots)
- Some are pathogens, causing diseases like cholera, typhoid, tetanus, and citrus canker
Reproduction of Bacteria
- Mainly reproduce by fission
- Can produce spores under unfavorable conditions
