Understanding the Self

Changing Bodies (U4U: Session 1)

Female sexual and reproductive systems share some but not all organs. The sexual system involves organs relevant for pleasure and activity; whereas the reproductive system focuses on pregnancy and birth.

Teen Age Pregnancy

- Societal effects of teenage pregnancy include a rise in population growth, higher dropout rates, and straining of the public health system, due to poverty and lack of medical access.
- Social factors that influence teenage pregnancy include immaturity, lack of sexual education, overprotection, and lack of affection, parental supervision, which lead to an increase of teen pregnancy rates.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
- STIs are primarily transmitted through sexual contact (vaginal, oral, and anal). There are three types: bacterial, viral, and parasitic. Examples include Vaginitis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), Genital Herpes, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Genital Warts, Hepatitis B. Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) / Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and Trichomonas.
- HIV is transmitted via blood, sexual fluids, and breast milk and is not transmitted by saliva, mucus, sweat, tears, or body waste.
- There is no cure for HIV. Prevention methods include abstinence, faithfulness, control, avoiding drug use, and knowledge via education.
Family Planning Methods
- A form of proactive decision-making and living based on knowledge, attitudes, and responsible decisions about family size and timing of births through birth control.
