    Study Notes

    Cerebellar Nuclei

    • There are four pairs of nuclei in the cerebellum:
      • Nucleus dentatus (neocerebellar)
      • Nucleus globosus and nucleus emboliformis (paleocerebellar)
      • Nucleus fastigii (archicerebellar)

    Arterial Supply of the Cerebrum

    • The brain is supplied by the internal carotid and vertebral arteries and their branches.

    Internal Carotid Artery

    • Pierces the dura mater and gives off:
      • Three large branches: ophthalmic artery, anterior cerebral artery, and middle cerebral artery
      • Two smaller branches: posterior communicating artery and anterior choroidal artery

    Anterior Cerebral Artery

    • Arises from the internal carotid artery below the anterior perforated substance
    • Runs forwards and medially to reach the longitudinal fissure separating the two cerebral hemispheres
    • Divides into cortical and central branches:
      • Cortical branches: supply the medial surface of the brain from the frontal pole to the parieto-occipital sulcus
      • Central branches: supply the basal ganglia, internal capsule, and thalamus

    Vertebral Artery and its Branches

    • Formed by the union of the right and left vertebral arteries at the lower border of the pons
    • Branches:
      • Anterior spinal artery
      • Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (supplies the inferior surface of the cerebellum)
      • Medullary branches (supply the medulla oblongata)

    Basilar Artery and its Branches

    • Formed by the union of the right and left vertebral arteries at the lower border of the pons
    • Branches:
      • Superior cerebellar artery (supplies the superior surface of the cerebellum)
      • Pontine branches (supply the pons and middle cerebellar peduncle)
      • Labyrinthine (internal auditory) artery (supplies the inner ear)
      • Anterior inferior cerebellar artery (supplies the inferior surface of the cerebellum)
      • Posterior cerebral arteries (supply the occipital lobe)

    Posterior Cerebral Artery

    • Curves backward and laterally around the midbrain
    • Branches:
      • Cortical branches (supply the occipital lobe and inferior temporal gyrus)
      • Central branches (supply the posterior perforated substance, cerebral peduncles, and thalamus)

Blood Supply of the Cerebral Hemisphere

    • The anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries give rise to two sets of branches: cortical and central
    • Cortical branches supply the cerebral cortex
    • Central branches supply structures within the cerebral hemisphere
