    Study Notes

    Cerebellum Anatomy

    • The cerebellum is the largest part of the hindbrain, located in the posterior cranial fossa.
    • It's related to the cerebral hemispheres (above) and the pons and medulla oblongata (in front).
    • It's separated from the cerebral hemispheres by the tentorium cerebelli.

    Cerebellum Structure

    • Composed of two lateral hemispheres.
    • Hemispheres have gyri (folia) separated by fissures (sulci).
    • Vermis is a narrow median part connecting the hemispheres.
    • Vermis has superior and inferior parts.
    • Divided into anterior, middle (posterior), and flocculonodular lobes.

    Cerebellar Surfaces

    • Superior surface: Shows a median longitudinal ridge (superior vermis).
    • A prominent V-shaped fissure (primary fissure) separates the anterior lobe from the middle (posterior) lobe of the superior cerebellar hemisphere.
    • Inferior surface: Each cerebellar hemisphere is separated by a deep median longitudinal groove. This groove contains the inferior vermis.

    Cerebellar Notches

    • Anterior notch: A wide notch at the back of the brainstem. Cerebellar peduncles enter the brain here.
    • Posterior notch: A narrow notch that receives the falx cerebelli.

    Fissures of the Cerebellum

    • Primary fissure: Runs across the superior surface, separating the anterior lobe from the middle (posterior) lobe.
    • Posterolateral fissure: Separates the flocculonodular lobe from the rest of the cerebellar hemisphere.
    • Horizontal fissure: Separates the superior and inferior surfaces of the cerebellum.

    Flocculus

    • Lies along the anterior border of the inferior cerebellar hemisphere.
    • Relatively isolated from the hemisphere.
    • Connected to the nodule by a bridge, forming the flocculonodular lobe.

    Key Anatomical Structures

    • Tentorium cerebelli: Separates the cerebellum and brainstem.
    • Falx cerebelli: A fold of dura mater that partially separates the cerebellar hemispheres.
    • Infundibulum: A stalk connecting the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland.
    • Fourth ventricle: A space in the brainstem that the cerebellum is adjacent to.
    • Cerebellar peduncles: Tracts of white matter connecting the cerebellum to the brainstem.
    • Arbor vitae: The white matter of the cerebellum, appearing tree-like.
    • Tonsils: Prominent structures that project inferiorly from the cerebellum.
