Study Notes
Cement Overview
- Cement is a versatile building material used for thousands of years
- It's a binder, combining with water to create a paste that hardens and binds other materials
- It is now frequently used in interior design for aesthetic purposes
- Cement can be natural or artificial
- It is a mixture of calcareous, siliceous, argillaceous, and other substances
- It is a binding material in mortar and concrete
Cement Manufacturing
- Wet Process:
- Raw materials (soft) are mixed and crushed, stored in silos
- Crushed materials are combined in correct ratios in a wet grinding mill.
- Mixed with water to form slurry, stored in slurry silos
- Slurry is fed into a rotary kiln, moving through three zones (dry, burning, and cooling)
- Grinding:
- Cooled clinkers are ground, gypsum added
- Collected in storage silos after processing
- Dry Process: raw materials are hard
- Raw materials are mixed after crushing, drying, and size reduction.
Types of Cement
- Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC):
- Most common type used in construction and interior design.
- Made from fine powder mixed with aggregates (sand, gravel), water to form concrete
- Hardens in roughly 24 hours
- Strong but light weight
- Useful in highways and cold areas, under water structures
- Rapid hardening cement:
- Hardens within 24 hours
- Suitable for use in high-speed construction, in highway, under water structures and cold weather areas
- High alumina cement
- Blast furnace slag cement
- Super sulphated cement
- Low heat cement
- Air entraining cement
- Quick setting cement
- Coloured cement
- White cement
- Acid resistance cement
- Hydrophobic cement
Uses of Cement
- Cement mortar is a paste made from cement and sand
- Cement concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregates, and water
- Used to create frost-resistant and fire-proof structures
- Used for chemical resistant structures
- Used in road construction
- Used in precast components
- Used in aesthetic concrete constructions
Cement Techniques and Finishes
- Polished Concrete: Ground and polished to produce a smooth, glossy finish
- Stained Concrete: stained using acid or water based stains for color and pattern
- Textured finishes: various techniques (stamping, stenciling) in concrete for pattern and textures
- Customization: Adding glass, fibres or aggregates to the cement
Sustainability and Maintenance
- Cement is an eco-friendly material.
- A low carbon footprint compared to other materials.
- Proper sealing and maintenance to improve longevity
- Regular cleaning and resealing help maintain appearance and durability of cement elements
Cement Applications in Interior Design
- Flooring: Polished, stained, or stamped concrete
- Walls: Accent walls, or precast concrete panels
- Counter tops: Unique appearances and customization options
- Furniture and decorative items: Molded into various shapes
- Wall panels and tiles: Add texture and interest to walls in modern industrial aesthetic.
