Cell Structure and Function
- Plasma Membrane: A permeable membrane surrounding the entire cell, essential for life.
- Cytoplasm: A gel-like fluid filling the cell, containing electrolytes, metabolic waste, and nutrients. It houses cell structures.
- Nucleus: The control center of the cell, containing DNA. Located at the center of the cell.
- Nuclear Membrane: A double-layered, porous membrane surrounding the nucleus, protecting it.
- Nucleolus: A dark body within the nucleus, forming rRNA (ribosomes). It lacks an enclosing membrane.
- Mitochondria: Rod-shaped bodies within the cytoplasm, converting nutrients into energy for the cell's use (the cell's power plant).
- Ribosomes: RNA found in the nucleolus, responsible for protein synthesis; found both attached and free within the cell.
- Ribosomes: RNA. A critical component for protein synthesis.
- Cilia: Short microtubules that move things along the cell surface.
- Flagella: Long microtubules that move the entire cell.
- Endoplasmic Reticulum: A transport system connecting the cell membrane to the nucleus, transporting materials throughout the cell.
