Human Reproductive System

  • The human reproductive system consists of gametogenesis, insemination, fertilization, implantation, gestation, and parturition.
  • Gametogenesis is the formation of gametes (sperm and ovum) in males and females respectively.

Male Reproductive System

  • Consists of:
    • Primary sex organs: a pair of testes suspended in a scrotum.
    • Secondary sex organs: a pair of ducts differentiated into rete testis, vasa efferentia, epididymis, vas deferens, ejaculatory duct, and associated glands.
    • External genitalia.

Female Reproductive System

  • Consists of:
    • Primary sex organs: a pair of ovaries.
    • Secondary sex organs: the duct system consisting of fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina.
    • External genitalia and mammary glands.
  • Uterus is composed of three layers: perimetrium (external membrane), myometrium (middle thick layer of smooth muscles), and endometrium (inner lining that undergoes cyclic changes during the menstrual cycle).

Gametogenesis

  • Gametogenesis is the process of formation of male and female gametes in testes and ovaries respectively.
  • Types of gametogenesis: spermatogenesis in males and oogenesis in females.

Spermatogenesis

  • Process of formation of mature sperm in testes.
  • Starts at puberty, involving hormonal control.
  • Structure of sperm: consists of head, neck, middle piece, and tail, with a haploid nucleus covered by acrosome.
  • Human male ejaculates around 200-300 million sperm during coitus.

Oogenesis

  • Process of formation of mature female gametes in ovaries.
  • Starts during embryonic development stage.
  • Ovaries contain millions of oogonia (gamete mother cells) formed during fetal development.
