Cardiovascular System Anatomy and Physiology
- Comprises blood, blood vessels, and the heart.
Heart Characteristics
- Cone-shaped, resembling an inverted pyramid or blunted cone.
- Small size, roughly equivalent to a closed fist.
- Rests on the diaphragm, located in the mediastinum.
- Positioned between the sternum and vertebral column, with 2/3 of its mass pointing to the left.
Heart Orientation and Levels
- Apex: Pointed end, oriented anteriorly and inferiorly, directed to the left, located around the 5th rib.
- Base: Broader part, oriented posteriorly and superiorly, directed to the right, positioned near the 2nd and 3rd ribs.
Pericardium
- A fibrous connective sac enclosing the heart, comprising two layers:
- Fibrous Pericardium: Outermost layer, prevents over-stretching and anchors the heart.

Serous Pericardium: Innermost layer, consists of two parts:
- Visceral Serous Pericardium: Also known as the epicardium, tightly adheres to the heart.
- Parietal Serous Pericardium: Outermost layer of serous pericardium, adheres to the fibrous pericardium.
Pericardial Fluid
- Reduces friction within the heart, found between the visceral and parietal layers.
- Normal volume is about 50 mL.
- Decreased fluid: Leads to pericardial friction rub, indicative of pericarditis.
- Increased fluid: Results in cardiac tamponade, which can be fatal due to impaired heart contraction.
Surfaces of the Heart
- Anterior Surface (Sternocostal): Composed of the right atrium and right ventricle, with the right ventricle forming the most anterior surface.
- Posterior Surface (Base Surface): Includes right and left atria, with the left atrium forming the most posterior surface.
- Inferior Surface (Diaphragmatic): Features right and left ventricles, with the left ventricle forming the apex.
Chambers of the Heart

- Divided by the interatrial septum, which contains the fossa ovalis (a remnant of the foramen ovale).
- Right Atrium: Has openings for the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, and coronary sinus.

- Papillary muscles contract to help close valves via chordae tendinae.
