Study Notes

Cardiac Arrest Actions

  • A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating and breathing becomes abnormal or stops.
  • Without immediate action, death is likely.

Survival Steps

  • Shout for help: Gently shake the person, and then check for breathing.
  • Look for signs of breathing: Observe the person's chest for rising and falling.
  • Call 999: Place the phone on loudspeaker and indicate you are with someone who is not breathing.
  • Locate AED (Automated External Defibrillator): The ambulance operator guides you to the nearest AED. If someone is with you, ask that person to retrieve it.
  • Do not leave the person: If you are alone, stay and help; continue until aid arrives.
  • Start chest compressions: Interlock your fingers, place hands in the center of the chest, and push firmly and rhythmically (twice per second) until they are finished.

Defibrillator and CPR

  • Use a defibrillator: If one is available, follow its instructions.
  • CPR Continued: The steps of CPR continue until:
    • The AED reassesses and/or shocks again
    • Paramedics arrive and dictate the further steps
    • The person shows signs of life.
