Questions and Answers

Which of the following best describes the mechanism of action of alkylating agents in cancer treatment?

  • They attach to DNA and prevent it from reproducing properly. (correct)
  • They enhance the immune system to target and destroy cancer cells.
  • They disrupt critical cell pathways, halting tumor growth.
  • They stimulate rapid cell division, overwhelming the cancerous cells.

A patient undergoing chemotherapy with an alkylating agent is concerned about potential side effects. What is a significant long-term side effect that should be discussed?

  • Enhanced cardiovascular function.
  • Permanent infertility in both males and females. (correct)
  • Temporary hair loss.
  • Increased appetite and weight gain.

Antimetabolite medications are designed to target which aspect of cancer cell growth?

  • Increasing the rate of protein synthesis in cancer cells.
  • Stimulating the cancer cells to differentiate into normal cells.
  • Repairing damaged DNA within cancer cells.
  • Disrupting critical cell pathways necessary for tumor survival. (correct)

Study Notes

  • Cancer Meds

Alkylating Agents

  • Attach to DNA and prevent it from reproducing
  • Effective during all phases of the cell cycle
  • Leukemia (blood and bone marrow) is sensitive to them
  • Examples include Chlorambucil, Cisplatin, Cyclophosphamide, and Dacarbazine
  • Can be administered PO (Orally) or IV (Intravenously)
  • Side effect: Permanent infertility, both male and female

Antimetabolite Meds

  • Disrupt critical cell pathways
  • Treat ovarian, breast, and GI tumors, and some leukemia
  • Can be administered PO (Orally), IV (Intravenously), or topically

Antitumor Antibiotics

  • Bacteria found in soil are used to create antibiotics to kill cancer
  • Cause cell death, although they have potential for cytotoxic effect
  • Bleomycin can treat Hodgkin's lymphoma and testicular cancer
  • Dactinomycin treats cancer of the kidney, uterus, testicle, bone, muscles, joints, and soft tissues
  • Can affect the lungs while treating the cancer

Plant Extracts (Alkaloids)

  • Are mitotic inhibitors that prevent cell division
  • Soft tissue, breast, ovarian, testicle, stomach, prostate, head, neck, and lung cancer
