    Study Notes

    Female Reproductive System

    • Overview: The female reproductive system encompasses the organs involved in reproduction. Included are diagrams of the system.

    Ovary

    • Structure: Almond-shaped.
    • Hormones: Produces reproductive hormones.
    • Support: Broad ligament, mesovarium, and suspensory ligaments.
    • Vessels and Nerves: Blood vessels, nerves run through the mesovarium, and suspensory ligaments. These structures originate and traverse the superolateral aspect.
    • Ligaments: Ovarian ligament and Suspensory ligament, are part of the support system for the ovary.
    • Blood Supply: Ovarian arteries (from abdominal aorta), ascending branches of the uterine arteries (from internal iliac arteries).
    • Venous Drainage: Pampiniform plexus of veins, Right Ovarian Vein (into IVC), Left Ovarian Vein (into the left renal vein). Tubal veins drain into the ovarian and uterine veins.
    • Lymphatics: Lymphatic vessels follow ovarian blood vessels, ascend to the right and left lumbar (caval/aortic) lymph nodes.
    • Innervation: Ovarian plexus, part of the Uterine (Pelvic) Plexus, visceral afferent pain fibers ascend retrogradely along sympathetic fibers, and lumbar splanchnic nerves to cell bodies in the T11-L1 spinal sensory ganglia.

    Uterine Tube

    • Structure: 10 cm long, with 4 parts:
    • Infundibulum: Funnel-shaped end.
    • Ampulla: Widest and longest part.
    • Isthmus: Thick-walled, enters uterine horn.
    • Uterine Part: Short intramural segment.
    • Function: Conducts oocyte from ovary to uterus (fertilization usually occurs here).
    • Location: Lateral to uterus, from the uterine horn to the uterine cavity.
    • Parts: Infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, uterine part.
    • Support: Mesosalpinx
    • Vessels: Arterial supply is derived from uterine and ovarian arteries. Branches pass through the mesosalpinx.
    • Nerves: Part of the pelvic and ovarian plexuses.

    Uterus

    • Structure: Pear-shaped, muscular organ, lies in the lesser pelvis; body, supravaginal cervix, vaginal cervix.
    • Location: Anterior to rectum; posterior to the bladder
    • position: Anteverted (tipped forward) and Anteflexed (bent forward).
    • Size and Weight: About 7.5cm long, 5 cm wide, and 2 cm thick; 90 grams.
    • Layers: Perimetrium (outermost), Myometrium (middle smooth muscle), and Endometrium (inner mucous).
    • Vessels: Arterial supply: uterine arteries (collateral branches from ovarian arteries), venous drainage: uterine veins (drain into internal iliac veins)
    • Support: Ligaments (ligaments of ovary, round ligament of uterus, broad ligament).
    • Nerves: Inferior hypogastric plexuses.

    Perineum

    • Definition: The region between the pubic symphysis, coccyx and thighs.
    • Structures: Structures such as muscles, ligaments, or vessels for both male and female.

    External Genitalia

    • Female: Mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, bulbs of vestibule, and greater and lesser vestibular glands.
    • Male: Urethra, scrotum, and penis.

    Clinical Considerations

    • Diagram: Diagrams depict various conditions, including cancer.
