  • A standardized method for estimating burn area in adults.
  • Body is divided into sections, each accounting for a percentage of total body surface area (TBSA).

Burn Percentage Estimates

  • Head:
    • Anterior: 4.5%
    • Posterior: 4.5%
  • Chest:
    • Front: 9%
  • Abdomen:
    • Front: 9%
  • Back:
    • Mid/Upper/Lower and Buttocks: 18%
  • Arms:
    • Each arm:
      • Front: 4.5%
      • Back: 4.5%
  • Legs:
    • Each leg:
      • Total 18% (Front: 9%, Back: 9%)
  • Groin:
    • 1% of TBSA
  • Total for Torso:
    • Front: 18%
    • Back: 18%

Rule of Palms

  • An alternative estimation method for burns on smaller areas.
  • The size of the patient's palm (including fingers) represents approximately 1% of TBSA.
