What is steel?

Steel is an alloy made by combining iron and other elements, the most common of these being carbon.

What are the four categories of structural steel based on carbon content?

Low Carbon Steel, Mild Steel, Medium Carbon Steel, High Carbon Steel

How are steel shapes formed in the hot-rolled procedure?

By rolling hot steel in a semi-solid state at a temperature above the recrystallization temperature.

How are steel shapes formed in the cold-formed procedure?

By rolling sheets from sheets, plates, or flats in rolling machines or by press breaking at a temperature below the recrystallization temperature.

What are the three means of joining structural steel shapes together?

Riveted, bolted, or welded connections according to specification/standard.

What is the most common element combined with iron to make steel?

Carbon

What is the temperature range for hot rolling steel?

Above 1700°F or 950°C

What is the minimum yield strength requirement for cold-formed steel (CFS) construction process?

At least 280 MPa

What is the abbreviation for Hollow Structural Section?

HSS

What are the steel sections used for formwork and trusses?

Hollow structural section (HSS) and steel tubes (circular hollow steel)

What are I-sections used for in steel construction?

Columns, beams, purlins in trusses, and grillage foundations

What type of steel sections are used for steel grillwork for windows and gates?

Flat sections

What are angle sections (ISA) extensively used for in structural steel works?

Roof trusses and as connecting members for different structures

What type of steel sections are widely used for beams and columns?

Channel sections

What are T-sections widely used as in steel construction?

Members of the steel roof truss and form built-up sections

What property is used to analyze the strength of cold-formed steel (CFS) elements?

Buckling property
