Brief History of the Internet
- The internet started as a networking project in 1958 by the U.S. Department of Defense
- The goal of the project was to create a network resistant to disasters and allow scientists to share information and collaborate on military and scientific projects
- The network, called ARPANET, used four main computers, one at each of four U.S. universities to connect academic and scientific researchers across the USA starting in 1969
- Today, the network called the internet has over 550 million host computers connected
- No single entity or government owns the internet
Internet Services
- The internet has changed how we communicate through the use of computers and mobile devices
- Internet services such as e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, VoIP, and FTP allow for various forms of communication
- E-mail (electronic mail) is the transmission of messages and files via a computer network and can include text, images, audio, and video
- An email address is a combination of a username and domain name separated by the @ symbol
- Mailing lists are a group of email names and addresses with a single name. When a message is sent, everyone on the list receives a copy.
- Instant Messaging (IM) is a real-time communication that enables users to exchange messages and files and join private chat rooms
- IM users must be online at the same time, and the receiver must be willing to accept messages, and all individuals on the contact list must use compatible instant messaging applications
Chat Rooms

- Chats are real-time typed conversations that take place on a computer
- Some chat rooms include voice and video chats
- To start a chat session, you connect to the chat server through a chat client
- Browsers typically include a chat client, but users can also download one from the web
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
- VoIP (also known as Internet telephony) allows users to speak to other users via the internet instead of the publicly switched network
- VoIP requires high-speed internet, internet telephone service, a microphone/telephone, and internet telephone software
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
- FTP is an internet standard that allows files to be uploaded and downloaded with other computers on the internet
- Downloading is the process of a computer receiving information from a server on the internet
- Uploading is the process of transferring documents from a computer to a server on the internet
- Many operating systems have FTP capabilities
Connecting to the internet

- Many users connect through high-speed broadband internet service providers, such as cable internet service, DSL, FTTP, fixed wireless, WiFi, and satellite internet service
The World Wide Web: Introduction
- The World Wide Web was started in 1989 by Sir Berners-Lee with the goal of exchanging information flawlessly
- The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) overlooks research and sets standards and guidelines for many areas of the internet
- Sir Berners-Lee became president of W3C in 1994
