Brain Structure and Function
- The brain is a complex organ controlling bodily functions.
- It's located within the skull and protected by meninges.
- Divided into cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem.
Cerebrum
- Largest part of the brain.
- Divided into two hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum.
- Each hemisphere has four lobes:
- Frontal lobe: Reasoning, planning, movement.
- Parietal lobe: Sensory information (touch, temperature, pain).
- Temporal lobe: Auditory processing, memory, speech.
- Occipital lobe: Visual processing.
Cerebellum
- Located at the back, below the cerebrum.
- Coordinates voluntary movements, balance, and posture.
Brainstem
- Connects the brain to the spinal cord.
- Consists of midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.
- Controls basic bodily functions (breathing, heart rate, digestion).
Other Brain Structures
- Thalamus: Relay station for sensory information.
- Hypothalamus: Regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, hormones.
- Limbic system: Emotions, memory, behavior (amygdala, hippocampus, cingulate gyrus).
- Ventricles: Fluid-filled spaces producing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for protection and nourishment.
- Cerebral cortex: Outer layer, highly folded for more neural connections, crucial for higher cognitive functions.
- Basal ganglia: Involved in voluntary motor control, habit formation, rewards.
