Study Notes
Bony Pelvis Structure
- The bony pelvis consists of four bones: two innominate bones, the sacrum, and the coccyx.
Sacroiliac Joint
- The sacroiliac joint is formed by the articulation of the auricular surface of the sacrum with the auricular surface of the ilium.
Pelvis Anatomical Position
- The normal anatomical position of the pelvis is when the anterior superior iliac spines and the pubic symphysis are in the same vertical plane.
Sacrum Structure
- The base of the sacrum is formed from the superior surface of the first sacral vertebra.
Ventral Sacral Foramina
- The ventral sacral foramina on the pelvic surface of the sacrum transmit the anterior sacral nerves.
Peritoneum Reflection
- In males, the peritoneum reflects to form the rectovesical pouch at the level of the bladder neck.
- In females, the peritoneum reflects to form the uterovesical pouch at the level of the uterus.
- In females, the peritoneum covers the posterior aspect of the uterus after reflecting from the anterior abdominal wall.
Recto-Uterine Pouch
- In females, the peritoneum forms the recto-uterine pouch at a distance of about 5-6 cm above the anal orifice.
Rectum Peritoneum Coverage
- In males, the peritoneum covers the anterior and lateral surfaces of the rectum.
