Study Notes
Bones Associated with the Skull
- The auditory ossicles are three tiny ear bones located in the petrous part of each temporal bone.
- The three auditory ossicles are:
- Malleus
- Incus
- Stapes
- They are discussed in detail in section 16.5a.
Hyoid Bone
- The hyoid bone is a slender, U-shaped bone located inferior to the skull, between the mandible and the larynx (voice box).
- It does not articulate with any other bone in the skeleton.
- The hyoid bone has three main parts:
- Medial body
- Greater cornua (horn-like processes)
- Lesser cornua (horn-like processes)
- The cornua and body serve as attachment sites for tongue and anterior neck muscles and ligaments.
