Bombay Stock Exchange
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is India's leading stock exchange based on market capitalization. It was established on July 9, 1875, with just two brokers trading under a banyan tree in Mumbai (then known as Bombay). Today, it is one of Asia's oldest formal stock exchanges and globally recognized as a vital link between borrowers and lenders seeking funds from the domestic and international markets.
History
Established more than 140 years ago, the BSE has seen its fair share of ups and downs. In 1865, British barrister Thomas Hutchins started India's first stock jobber firm in Bombay. Three thousand miles away, the London Stock Exchange was founded in 1801. On July 9, 1875, a group of 21 business pioneers came together and opened the doors of the securities exchange in the heart of Bombay, which later became the BSE.
In 1876, a year after its establishment, the company was registered as 'Bombay Stock Exchange' under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. Over the years, the BSE's membership grew rapidly, reaching nearly 400 by 1895.
Location and Building
Originally located near the Flora Fountain in South Mumbai, the BSE moved several times before finding its permanent home in Dalal Street. The current building, designed by the famous architect Charles Correa, is named after Late Shri Prakash Javadekar. It was inaugurated on November 25, 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The iconic structure showcases intricate marble mosaic work inspired by the traditional art form of Kishangarh. Its interior features glass walls, a large auditorium, and modern amenities.
Membership
Today, the BSE boasts over 5,000 members across various categories including traders, brokers, and investors. These businesses operate through approximately 500 brokerage houses stationed in different parts of India.
Operations and Services
As a leading financial market in the country, the BSE offers a wide range of services, including equity, debt, and derivatives products across multiple sectors. It also operates various indices such as SENSEX, BSE 200, Bank Nifty, and Midcap. The BSE provides trading facilities in both cash and futures segments. Trading hours on working days are from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST.
Throughout its history, the BSE has remained committed to promoting economic growth by providing access to affordable financing opportunities while ensuring investor protection and fostering integrity within the industry.
