Body Systems Terminology
- Anatomical position: Standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms forward, fingers extended. This is the standard reference point for describing body positions and movements.
Location Terminology
- Anterior (ventral): Front of the body
- Posterior (dorsal): Back of the body
- Medial: Closer to the midline of the body (e.g., ulnar in the forearm, tibial in the leg)
- Lateral: Farther from the midline of the body (e.g., radial in the forearm, fibular in the leg)
- Superior: Above
- Inferior: Below
- Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or origin
- Distal: Farther from the point of attachment or origin
- Superficial: Closer to the surface
- Deep: Farther from the surface
- Plantar: Bottom of the foot
- Dorsal (dorsum): Top of the foot
- Palmar (volar): Anterior aspect of the hand
- Cephalad: Toward the head
- Caudad: Toward the tail
Planes and Axes
- Planes: Imaginary flat surfaces dividing the body. Three main planes:
- Sagittal: Divides the body into right and left halves. The midsagittal plane is precisely in the middle.
- Frontal (coronal): Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) halves.
- Transverse (horizontal): Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) halves.
- Axes: Imaginary lines around which body parts rotate. Three main axes:
- Mediolateral (frontal axis): Runs from side to side.
- Anteroposterior (sagittal axis): Runs from front to back.
- Superoinferior (vertical axis): Runs from top to bottom.
