    Study Notes

    Body Systems Terminology

    • Anatomical position: Standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms forward, fingers extended. This is the standard reference point for describing body positions and movements.

    Location Terminology

    • Anterior (ventral): Front of the body
    • Posterior (dorsal): Back of the body
    • Medial: Closer to the midline of the body (e.g., ulnar in the forearm, tibial in the leg)
    • Lateral: Farther from the midline of the body (e.g., radial in the forearm, fibular in the leg)
    • Superior: Above
    • Inferior: Below
    • Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or origin
    • Distal: Farther from the point of attachment or origin
    • Superficial: Closer to the surface
    • Deep: Farther from the surface
    • Plantar: Bottom of the foot
    • Dorsal (dorsum): Top of the foot
    • Palmar (volar): Anterior aspect of the hand
    • Cephalad: Toward the head
    • Caudad: Toward the tail

    Planes and Axes

    • Planes: Imaginary flat surfaces dividing the body. Three main planes:
      • Sagittal: Divides the body into right and left halves. The midsagittal plane is precisely in the middle.
      • Frontal (coronal): Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) halves.
      • Transverse (horizontal): Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) halves.
    • Axes: Imaginary lines around which body parts rotate. Three main axes:
      • Mediolateral (frontal axis): Runs from side to side.
      • Anteroposterior (sagittal axis): Runs from front to back.
      • Superoinferior (vertical axis): Runs from top to bottom.
