Flashcards

Anatomic Position

The standard reference position for describing body parts and movements.

Sagittal Plane

Divides the body into right and left halves. Movement occurs front-to-back or back-to-front.

Midsagittal Plane

A sagittal plane that divides the body exactly in half.

Frontal/Coronal Plane

Divides the body into front and back halves. Movement happens from the middle to the side or side to the middle.

Study Notes

Body Systems Terminology

  • Anatomic position: Standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms forward, fingers extended. This is the standard reference position for describing body positions and movements.
  • Anterior (ventral): Front of the body
  • Posterior (dorsal): Back of the body
  • Medial: Closer to the midline of the body
  • Lateral: Further away from the midline of the body
  • Superior: Above
  • Inferior: Below
  • Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or origin
  • Distal: Further from the point of attachment or origin
  • Superficial: Closer to the surface of the body
  • Deep: Further from the surface of the body

Body Planes and Axes

  • Planes: Imaginary flat surfaces used to describe body motion.

    • Sagittal plane: Divides the body into right and left halves. Midsagittal plane divides the body into equal halves.
    • Frontal (coronal) plane: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) halves.
    • Transverse (horizontal) plane: Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) halves.
  • Axes: Imaginary lines around which body parts rotate.

    • Sagittal axis: Runs medial-lateral
    • Frontal (coronal) axis: Runs anterior-posterior
    • Vertical (superoinferior) axis: Runs superior-inferior
