Study Notes
- Burns and scalds damage human skin.
- Burns are caused by dry heat like ironing clothes or cooking.
- Scalds are caused by wet heat like boiled water, fat, oil, and steam.
- Fire is a hot and bright flame produced by burning materials such as wood, charcoal, paper, and petrol.
Causes of Fire Accidents
- Fire is useful for cooking, heating, and boiling water.
- Fire is used to burn waste materials like grass, worn-out clothes, and paper, but can be dangerous.
- Devices like electric irons, electric sockets, gas cookers, and charcoal can cause fire accidents.
- Cars and motorcycles can cause fire accidents when fuel catches sparks.
- Hot liquids like water, milk, cooking oil, tea, or steam can cause burns.
- Chemicals like acids can also cause burns upon skin contact.
- First aid should be provided to burn victims while sending them to the hospital and treatment is needed urgently.
- Health practitioners will assess the burn type and specify the treatment.
- Victims of fire often experience severe pain and lose body fluids and minerals.
Fire Extinguishers
- Fire extinguishers are tools used to put out or control a fire.
- Different types of fire extinguishers exist for various burning materials.
- Water is used to extinguish fires from wood, paper, cloth, and plastics.
- Fire extinguishers for different burning materials include:
- A fire blanket
- Dry sand
- Water
- A carbon dioxide (CO2) cylinder
- A foam cylinder
- Fire extinguishers should be in easily accessible, clean, and dry places marked clearly.
- Fire extinguishers are important at home, school, hospitals, and in public transport to control fires and prevent harm.
First Aid for Fire Victims
- First aid for a fire victim depends on the type of burn.
- Immediate steps to help a victim include:
- Removing the person from the source of heat
- Cutting off the oxygen supply to stop the fire
- Moving the victim to a safe, cool place with fresh air
- Covering the victim with a fire blanket or splashing with pressurized water if clothes are burning (use water only for fires from substances such as wood, paper, cloth, trash and plastic)
- Check the victim's breathing by observing the movement of the chest and stomach
- If not breathing, tilt the head back to open airways, cover the mouth with a clean cloth, and perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
First Aid for Minor/Superficial Burns
- This type of burn affects the outer layer of skin.
- Steps include:
- Cooling the burn with clean, running water for about ten minutes (avoid ice)
- Covering the burn with a sterile, moist, non-adhesive bandage or clean cloth.
- Not breaking blisters because the fluid protects against infection
- Avoiding lotion, oil, or fat on the burn
- Minor burns usually heal without further treatment
First Aid for Major Burns
- Major burns cause severe skin damage, with red skin, blisters, and extreme pain.
- Steps include:
- Ensuring the victim is away from the burn source
- Removing rings, watches, belts, shoes, and loose clothing (do not remove clothes stuck to the body)
- Avoid immersing severe burn into cold water to prevent loss of body heat which can cause shock
- Covering the burnt area with a clean, soft, moist cloth or sterilized bandage loosely
- Checking breathing and performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if needed, and placing the person in the recovery position
- Taking the victim to the nearest hospital for treatment
