BMW Management Guidelines 2011 Exclusions
- The guidelines do not cover radioactive waste, hazardous chemicals, municipal solid waste, lead acid batteries, and hazardous waste.
Categories of BMW (Schedule I)
- Category 1: Human anatomical waste, disposed of through incineration.
- Category 2: Animal waste, disposed of through incineration.
- Category 3: Microbiological and biotechnology waste, disposed of through: • Chemical treatment or autoclaving or microwaving • Mutilation or shredding • Landfill or recyclers
- Category 4: Wasted sharps, disposed of through: • Chemical treatment or destruction by needle or tip cutters or autoclaving or microwaving • Mutilation or shredding • Landfill or concrete sharps pit
- Category 5: Discarded medicines and cytotoxic drugs, disposed of through landfill or incineration.
- Category 6: Soiled waste, disposed of through incineration.
- Category 7: Infectious solid waste, disposed of through: • Chemical treatment or autoclaving or microwaving • Mutilation or shredding • Recyclers
- Category 8: Chemical waste, disposed of through: • Chemical treatment • Disposal in drains
Color Coding and Disposal (Schedule II)
- Yellow containers: used for waste categories 1, 2, 5, and 6, treated through incineration.
- Red containers: used for waste categories 3, 4, and 7, treated through: • Chemical treatment or destruction or autoclaving or microwaving • Mutilation or shredding • Landfill or recyclers or concrete sharps pit

Medical Education and Regulatory Body
