Study Notes
Controlled Vocabulary
- A standardized and consistent set of terms to aid in finding relevant information and reduce ambiguity in human language.
- Created and edited by a governing body that introduces new terms, phases out old ones, and adds new mapping for concepts.
- Examples include Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) used in PubMed and OVID to search MEDLINE database.
Taxonomy
- A hierarchical organization of concepts that supports classification, categorization, and concept organization.
- Uses IS/A relationships to establish a hierarchical structure.
Thesuri
- A taxonomy enriched with new types of relationships and their meaning.
- Not limited to structuring all concepts into a limited number of top-level hierarchies.
- A type of semantic network.
Thesauri Example
- Establishes relationships between words, including synonyms, homonyms, antonyms, etc.
Collaborative Tagging
- Free-text tags used for collaborative tagging.
Core Knowledge Organization Systems
- Controlled Vocabulary: Mandates the use of community-agreed, authorized terms.
- Taxonomy: Hierarchical arrangement of concepts.
- Thesauri: Establishes relationships between words.
- Ontology: Taxonomy + provides semantics for concepts with more relationship types.
Folksonomy
- Crowdsourcing identification of online content with 'tags' in an unstructured manner.
Applications of Ontologies
- General Applications: Annotations & Enrichment Analyses, Data Harmonization, Inference.
- Other areas of application: Indexing, Knowledge Sharing & Reuse, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Enterprise Modeling, Software Design, Molecular Biology, eCommerce….
Biomedical Ontologies
- National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO) provides a comprehensive repository of biomedical ontologies through BioPortal.
- Examples of commonly used ontologies: Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA), Drug Vocabularies (RXNORM), Gene Ontology (GO).
