    Study Notes

Blood is a type of C.T content is 55% Plasma And 45% Cells Cell:1-RBCs 2- RBCs 3-platelets and Stained with leishman stain Shape:round and non nucleated Biconcave shape from side view Darkperiphery and pale center acidophilic the have Rouleaux Formation

    Function of Red Blood Cells

    • Deliver oxygen from lungs to body's tissues and organs
    • Carry carbon dioxide from tissues and organs back to lungs for exhalation

    Structure of Red Blood Cells

    • Flexible, disk-shaped cells with no nucleus or mitochondria
    • Contain membrane protein spectrin, which gives them unique shape and allows change of shape to fit through narrow blood vessels
    • Contain protein hemoglobin, which binds to oxygen and gives blood its red color

    Production of Red Blood Cells

    • Produced in bone marrow through erythropoiesis
    • Regulated by hormone erythropoietin (EPO) produced by kidneys
    • EPO stimulates production of RBCs in response to low oxygen levels in body

    Lifespan of Red Blood Cells

    • Average lifespan of RBC is approximately 120 days
    • Removed from circulation by spleen and destroyed at end of lifespan
    • Components of RBCs recycled, and iron reused to produce new RBCs
