Study Notes
- Bleeding time is a lab test that assesses platelet function and the body's ability to form clots.
- Bleeding time relies on capillary function.
- Bleeding time relies on the number of blood platelets present.
- Bleeding time relies on the ability to form a platelet plug.
Dukes Method: Materials
- Sterile, disposable blood lancet
- Stopwatch/timer
- Circular filter paper
- Spirit and cotton swabs
- Gloves
Dukes Method: Prodedure
- Take 1 filter paper, fold it, and write the number of seconds.
- Set the stopwatch to zero and prick the finger.
- Immediately touch the pricking point to 0 seconds on the filter paper and start the stopwatch.
- After the first touch, touch the pricking part to the filter paper every 30 seconds without squeezing the finger.
- Check the seconds mark on the filter paper when the blood stops.
- Normal bleeding time is 1-3 minutes.
Sources of Error
- Aspirin intake 7 to 10 days before the procedure can cause prolonged bleeding time.
- An improperly performed puncture (too shallow, too deep, or in an inappropriate location) can affect results.
- Residual alcohol before making the puncture can prolong bleeding time.
- Ensure that alcohol is completely dried before making the puncture, as residual alcohol can prolong bleeding time.
