Study Notes
- Bleeding time is a lab test to assess platelet function and the body's ability to form a clot.
- Bleeding time depends on capillary function, number of blood platelets present, and the ability to form a platelet plug.
Dukes Method Materials
- Sterile, disposable blood lancet
- Stopwatch (timer)
- Circular filter paper
- Spirit and cotton swabs
- Gloves
Dukes Method Procedure
- Take filter paper, fold, and record number of seconds.
- Set stopwatch to zero and prick finger.
- Immediately touch the pricking point to the filter paper at 0 seconds and start the stopwatch.
- After initial touch, touch the pricking part to the filter paper every 30 seconds, avoid squeezing finger.
- Check the seconds mark on the filter paper when the blood stops.
- Normal bleeding time value is 1-3 minutes.
Sources of Error
- Prolonged bleeding time can occur with aspirin intake 7 to 10 days prior to the procedure.
- Improperly performed puncture (too shallow, too deep, or inappropriate location) leads to error.
- Alcohol must be completely dried before puncture.
- Residual alcohol leads to prolonged bleeding time (BT).
