Study Notes

Mutation Types

Frameshift Mutation

  • A type of mutation that occurs when there is an insertion or deletion of one or more nucleotides in a DNA sequence
  • Results in a change in the reading frame of the genetic code
  • Can lead to the creation of a completely new sequence of amino acids in a protein
  • Often results in a non-functional protein or a protein with a different function

Point Mutation

  • A type of mutation that involves a change in a single nucleotide base in a DNA sequence
  • Can be classified as:
    • Silent mutation: no effect on the amino acid sequence
    • Missense mutation: changes the amino acid sequence
    • Nonsense mutation: leads to a premature stop codon
  • Can result in a change to the function of a protein or the creation of a new protein

Chromosomal Mutation

  • A type of mutation that involves changes to the number or structure of chromosomes
  • Can be classified as:
    • Numerical mutations: changes in the number of chromosomes (e.g. aneuploidy, polyploidy)
    • Structural mutations: changes in the structure of a chromosome (e.g. deletions, duplications, translocations)
  • Can result in changes to the expression of genes or the creation of new proteins

Gene Mutation

  • A type of mutation that involves a change to a gene or its regulatory elements
  • Can affect the expression of a gene, leading to changes in the production of a protein
  • Can result in a change to the function of a protein or the creation of a new protein

Spontaneous Mutation

  • A type of mutation that occurs naturally, without the influence of external factors
  • Can occur due to errors in DNA replication or repair
  • Can result in changes to the function of a protein or the creation of a new protein

Note: These notes provide a brief overview of the different types of mutations. Each type of mutation can have significant effects on the function of proteins and the expression of genes.
