Classification Overview
- Classification arranges animals and plants into taxonomic groups based on similarities.
- Key levels include kingdom and phylum for animals, and division for plants.
- Further divisions are class, order, family, genus, and species.
Kingdom
- Living organisms are categorized into five kingdoms: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Bacteria, and Protists.
- This classification serves as the highest taxonomic level on Earth.
Phylum
- The animal kingdom is divided into approximately 40 phyla to group species by key features.
- Major categories include invertebrates, vertebrates, arthropods, molluscs, and echinoderms.
Class
- Each phylum is subdivided into classes.
- Vertebrates split into five main classes: Mammalia (mammals), Bony Fish, Aves (birds), Amphibia (amphibians), and Reptilia (reptiles).
Genus
- Animal families are broken down into smaller groups called genera.
- Each genus includes closely related animals that share similar traits; for example, the cat family includes domestic cats, tigers, leopards, jaguars, lions, panthers, and cougars.
Species
- Each species is named based on unique characteristics and features.
- Scientific names are in Latin and consist of two parts: the first indicates the genus and the second specifies the species.
Example: Tiger
- Kingdom: Animalia (Animal)
- Phylum: Chordata (Vertebrate)
- Class: Mammalia (Mammal)
- Genus: Panthera
- Species: Panthera tigris (Tiger)
