Photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis is an anabolic pathway that converts solar energy into chemical energy.
- It occurs in chloroplasts.
- The input is carbon dioxide, water, and light energy.
- The output is glucose (sugar) and oxygen.
- Photosynthesis is an endergonic reaction.
Cellular Respiration
- Cellular respiration is a catabolic pathway that breaks down glucose to produce ATP.
- It occurs in mitochondria.
- The input is glucose and oxygen.
- The output is carbon dioxide, water, and ATP (energy).
- Cellular respiration is an exergonic reaction.
Autotrophs vs Heterotrophs
- Autotrophs (producers) are organisms that make their own food using sunlight, such as plants.
- Heterotrophs (consumers) are organisms that obtain energy by consuming other organisms.
Chloroplast Structure
- Chloroplasts are located in the mesophyll of leaves.
- The chloroplast has an outer membrane, inner membrane, thylakoids, and stroma.
Photosynthesis Equation
- 6CO2 + 12H2O + Light energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2
Cellular Respiration Equation
- C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (ATP + heat)
Photosynthesis Stages
- Photosynthesis has two main stages:
- Light-dependent reactions (in thylakoids)
- Light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle, in stroma)
Photosynthetic Pigments
- Chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b absorb blue and red light.
Light-Dependent Reactions Products
- Oxygen (O2)
- ATP
- NADPH
Calvin Cycle Products
- Sugar (glucose)
- The main enzyme is Rubisco.
Importance of Photosynthesis
- Creates food (sugar)
- Releases oxygen into the atmosphere.
- Provides energy for all living things through food production.
