Study Notes

Fertilization

  • Fertilization occurs in the ampulla of the fallopian tube, where a human egg and sperm cell unite to produce a zygote.
  • The process involves the fusion of 23 sets of chromosomes from a spermatozoon and 23 sets of chromosomes from an egg cell.
  • The fertilized egg (zygote) undergoes repeated cell division as it moves down the fallopian tube towards the uterus.

Implantation

  • After fertilization, the embryo attaches to the lining of the uterus, usually near the top, in a process called implantation.
  • Implantation is completed within 9-10 days after fertilization.

Pregnancy

  • Pregnancy, also known as the gestation period, lasts approximately 40 weeks (280 days) from the last menstrual period to delivery.
  • A pregnancy with more than one fetus at a time is called a multiple pregnancy (twin or triplet).
  • Common signs and symptoms of pregnancy include:
    • Missed periods
    • Tender breasts
    • Morning sickness (nausea, vomiting)
    • Increased hunger
    • Frequent urination
  • Pregnancy can be confirmed through a pregnancy test.

Learn about the union of human egg and sperm cells, chromosome fusion, and embryonic development in the fertilization process.
