    Study Notes

    The Y Chromosome

    • The Y chromosome is shorter than the X chromosome and is only found in males
    • Males inherit an X chromosome from their mother and a Y chromosome from their father

    Structure of Chromosomes

    • Chromosomes consist of tightly wound DNA strands with supporting proteins called histones
    • The total length of DNA in each body cell is about 2 meters
    • The telomere is shortened during replication, which can cause damage, but is repaired by an enzyme called telomerase

    Genes

    • Only about 1% of the cell's DNA codes for proteins, the rest is known as "filler DNA"
    • Genes are DNA sequences that code for proteins, with the human genome containing roughly 20,500 genes
    • Genes are often found in pairs, with one gene on each chromosome in the pair

    DNA Structure

    • DNA is a double-stranded molecule made up of two chains of nucleotides
    • Each nucleotide consists of a sugar, a phosphate group, and a base
    • DNA resembles a twisted ladder with alternating sugars and phosphates forming the uprights and bases linking to the sugars forming the rungs

    Bases in DNA

    • The four bases in DNA are adenine (A), guanine (G), thymine (T), and cytosine (C)
    • The arrangement of bases allows for protein synthesis and follows complementary base pairing rules

    Mitochondrial DNA

    • Each cell contains an average of 5000 mitochondria that hold mitochondrial DNA, which is important for energy production
    • Mitochondrial DNA is inherited from the mother, leading to specific patterns across generations.

    Mutation

    • A mutation is a heritable change in the genetic makeup of a cell
    • Mutations can spontaneously occur due to errors in DNA replication or cell division

    • Figure 17.3 shows the structure of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) with labeled strands and bases
