Study Notes
Chemical Basis of Life
- Organisms' bodies are composed of various chemical compounds formed by bonding of elements.
- Only about 25 elements are found in living organisms, out of 92 elements in nature. These are present in diverse forms
- The four most common elements in living organisms are Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen.
- Other elements like Sulphur, Phosphorous, Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron and Chlorine are also essential for organisms.
- Figure 1.1 shows the percentages of the four main elements in the human body: Oxygen (65%), Carbon (18%), Hydrogen (10%), Nitrogen (3%), and Other elements (4%).
Types of Chemical Compounds
- Chemical compounds that make up living matter are categorized as organic and inorganic compounds.
- Organic compounds contain Carbon; inorganic compounds do not. Examples of inorganic compounds containing Carbon are Carbon dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Carbonates and Bicarbonates.
- Organic compounds that build living matter are called biomolecules, and they include:
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Lipids
- Nucleic acids
- These four types of compounds are considered to be the main biomolecules.
