5 Questions
Match the following parts of the long bone with their descriptions:
Diaphysis = Tubular shaft between proximal and distal ends Epiphysis = Wider end of the bone filled with spongy bone Medullary cavity = Hollow region in the diaphysis filled with yellow marrow Periosteum = Fibrous membrane covering the outer surface except where joints form
Match the following parts of the long bone with their characteristics:
Diaphysis = Dense and hard compact bone walls Epiphysis = Red marrow fills the spaces Medullary cavity = Contains yellow marrow Periosteum = Contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels
Match the following components of bone tissue with their functions:
Cells = Contribute to bone formation and maintenance Fibers = Provide structural support and strength Ground substance = Helps in the mineralization process Minerals = Give substantial strength and rigidity to bone
Match the following connective tissue components with their locations in the long bone:
Compact bone = Walls of the diaphysis Spongy bone = Fill the epiphysis Yellow marrow = Medullary cavity in the diaphysis Red marrow = Spaces in the spongy bone
Match the following connective tissues with their primary function:
Bone = Structural support and protection Periosteum = Nourishment and protection of bone surfaces Red marrow = Production of blood cells Yellow marrow = Storage of fats
Study Notes
Special Connective Tissue
- Bone is a specialized connective tissue composed of cells, fibers, and ground substance.
- Bone's extracellular components are mineralized, providing substantial strength and rigidity.
Parts of a Long Bone
Diaphysis
- The diaphysis is a tubular shaft that runs between the proximal and distal ends of the bone.
- The diaphysis contains a hollow region called the medullary cavity, which is filled with yellow marrow.
- The walls of the diaphysis are composed of dense and hard compact bone.
Epiphysis
- The epiphysis is the wider end of the bone, filled with spongy bone.
- Red marrow fills the spaces in the spongy bone.
- The epiphysis is covered by the periosteum, a fibrous membrane containing blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels that feed the compact bone.
- The periosteum covers the entire outer surface of the bone, except where the epiphyses meet other bones to form joints (articular surface).
Learn about the structure of bone, a specialized connective tissue, and its components, including the diaphysis and medullary cavity. Understand the unique features of bone and its functions.
