PIO Qualifications and Training
- Any Bernalillo County Fire Department member in good standing is eligible to apply for the PIO position when it is vacant.
- Members selected for the PIO position must obtain specific certifications within a designated timeframe, including:
- NMBA (New Mexico Broadcasters Association) 2-Day Media Relations and Public Information Workshop.
- NIMS (National Incident Management Systems) IS-702 Public Information Systems.
- DHSEM (Department Homeland Security Emergency Management) G-290 Basic Public Information Officers Course.
- DHSEM (Department Homeland Security Emergency Management) G-291 Joint Information Systems & Joint Information Center Planning Tribal, State and Local PIOs.
- FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Administration) ICS-400 Advanced Incident Command Systems and any pre-requisites.
- FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Administration) E-88 Advanced Public Information Officer (within a 2-year timeframe if accepted into the National Fire Academy class).
PIO Reporting Structure
- The PIO reports directly to the Fire Chief.
- The Fire Chief selects the Department Public Information Officers.
- In the absence of a PIO, the Fire Chief is notified of incidents requiring communication with the media and public.
- The Fire Chief will designate an alternate PIO or other department personnel to handle PIO duties for the absent PIO.
Incident Response and Communication
- The PIO will be automatically dispatched to specific incident types, as defined by the Fire Chief.
- PIOs monitor command pages and respond to incidents based on the provided information.
- The Incident Commander (IC) calls the PIO via radio or phone to respond to incidents.
Media Contact
- The Incident Commander (IC) or designee handles initial media contacts at the scene of an incident until the PIO arrives.
- The IC or designee may release factual information, such as the nature of the call, time, and place.
- Investigators handle details pertaining to investigative matters.
- The PIO or assigned designee will be consulted before releasing information.
